Northern Ireland, Fermanagh, Indecent Assault, male child, Court

A DRUMQUIN man has appeared at Omagh Magistrates' Court in custody charged with a number of counts of indecency against a young boy.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged that, on a date unknown between September 15, 1979 and September 14, 1980 he indecently assaulted a male child. He faced a further six similar charges relating to alleged offences between 1979 and 1981.

He faces a further charge that, between September 15, 1979 and September 14, 1986 he attempted to commit buggery with a boy under the age of 16.

He consented to the holding of a preliminary enquiry at Court on Tuesday. He declined to give evidence, call witnesses or make any statements on his own behalf at this juncture.

A public prosecutor advised the court that he believed that there was indeed a prima facie case to answer.

RM Greg McCourt said that from a reading of the papers he was satisfied that there was a prima facie case.

The defence counsel did not make any contrary submissions at this juncture, but successfully applied for two defence counsels to be certified for the case.

The accused was remanded in custody to appear for trial at Omagh Crown Court on January 19, 2007.

The defendant denies the charges.

Which means that nothing can be published that may identify any CHILD during court process yet; Council's can publish photographs and detailed profiles of children online in advertising them for adoption.
